A brainchild of the then Education Minister of Bihar Satyendra Narayan Sinha, Magadh University was established in 1962 to promote quality education in Bihar.

With its campus set in pristine countryside of Bodh Gaya, the place where Lord Buddha was enlightened under the Bodhisattva Tree, the then President of India Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan laid its foundation stone. Noted historian Dr. K. K. Dutta was appointed its first Vice Chancellor.

Since its foundation, the university has grown into a vast institution having 24 Post Graduate departments, 44 constituent colleges, and 85 affiliated colleges imparting education in Humanities, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Medical, Engineering, and Management.

Besides the traditional courses and departments, the university, in recent years, has introduced a host of professional and vocational courses like MBA, MCA, BCA, BBM, Environmental Science, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Counseling and Rehabilitation, Library Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, among others.

Currently, there are two medical colleges, two engineering colleges, one dental college and three law colleges under the Magadh University system.

With a Central Library and a number of college libraries, Magadh University boasts over a million books on a variety of subjects.

The university also prides itself providing laboratories at college level for both science and art students and offering comfortable lodging at very moderate rates.

Other facilities provided by the University include a university health care center and infirmary, a bank, sports complex for both indoor and outdoor activities, and a post office within the main campus.
