It's Graduation Day at IGIMS; Eight Awarded Gold Medals

Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, and Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Monday inaugurated the 4th convocation of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) where 144 students graduated with the MBBS and Post Graduate degrees, 22 of which earning gold and silver medals.

Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, and Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Monday inaugurated the 4th convocation of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) where 144 students graduated with the MBBS and Post Graduate degrees, 22 of which earning gold and silver medals.

The program began with a song on Bihar followed by the recognition of the graduate. Eight students were awarded with gold medal for topping their class.

Speaking on the occasion, IGIMS Director Prof. N R Biswas said that the institute has always believed in giving special attention to patient care, providing quality treatment, and research to keep with new technology and breakthroughs.

Touting the recent success of the hospital, Prof. Biswas said that so far, the institute had successfully performed 34 kidney transplantations followed by 86 cornea transplantations. "Starting this April, the hospital will also begin transplanting liver," he said.

Interestingly, all gold medalists this year happen to be girl students. It included Dr. Soma Bhattacharya (Anesthesia), Dr. Suman and Dr. Komal Bharti (Biochemistry), Dr. Shivani (Phamacology), Ria Anand (Microbiology), Dr. Monica Raj (Ophthalmology), MBBS second year toppers Dr. Priya Kumari and Dr. Swati Suman.

Besides handing out gold medals to the above students, the Chief Minister also awarded medals to the PG, MD, and MCH degree earners Dr. Ashul Garg, Dr. Pankaj Kumar Gupta, Dr. Anitesh Kumar, and Dr. Madhur Chowdhary.
