Patna: Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) founder and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan who died of medical complications shortly after a heart surgery at a hospital in Delhi on Thursday, was cremated with state honors at Patna’s Janardan Ghat in Digha on Saturday with his son and party president Chirag Paswan performing the last rites.

Politicians including Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejaswi Yadav, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Nityanand Rai and Giriraj Singh were among many who paid their last tribute to the man who was known for being a champion of the Dalits and his unique ability to sense which way the political wind was blowing.

Thousands of people cutting across political line took part in the funeral as the procession began from his home in Sri Krishna Puri at 1:10 pm reaching the ghat at 2:30 pm. The Chief Minister, along with others mentioned above and many others were already at the ghat to pay their final respect to the departed soul.

Following the completion of rituals, Chirag Paswan performed the last rites by setting the pyre on fire. Overcome by emotions, he momentarily passed out but was brought to consciousness by his family members.

Earlier, the body of Paswan, the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister in the Narendra Modi administration, arrived from Delhi at Patna Airport in a special aircraft where Chirag, Nitish Kumar, Sushil Kumar Modi and other leaders paid floral tribute to the LJP leader.

From the airport, the body was taken to the LJP office where the casket was laid for his supporters to get the last view of their leader.
