Patna: Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Professor in the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, was in Patna on Wednesday where he met with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal to share his ideas on a number of economic and environmental issues.
The meeting was held at the BJP state headquarters on Birchand Patel Marg where the professor was honored with a traditional shawl and other Bihar mementos in the presence of other party leaders.
Jaiswal who knows Prof. Greenstone on a personal level, had given a lecture at the University of Chicago in 2017 on the topic of measures taken by the Modi government to reduce pollution and improve environmental quality in India.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Greenstone praised the Bihar government for improving power scenario in the last five years. He also talked about his university’s involvement in many environmental and energy projects in India and how energy could be produced with minimal investment with little or no damage to the environment due to power cables and high-rise transformers.
According to the University of Chicago website, Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Professor in the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, Department of Economics, and the College, the Director of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), and Director of the Becker Friedman Institute (BFI). His research largely focuses on environmental and energy economics.
He previously served as the Chief Economist for President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, where he co-led the development of the United States Government’s social cost of carbon.
According to the website, Greenstone’s research, which has influenced policy globally, is largely focused on uncovering the benefits and costs of environmental quality and society’s energy choices.
